All About Remnants

If you’re familiar with Floors to Go, you know that we have a very large selection of carpet remnants with some sheet vinyl selections thrown in. Some people love remnants, yet others are confused by them. Many people wonder, “What is a remnant? What is it used for? Is a remnant better than custom-cut carpet? Is it used?” etc. Today on the blog, we’re going to learn all about remnants.

What is a remnant?

Generally, a remnant is just what the name implies. It is a leftover piece of new material. In most cases, it’s what’s left of a giant carpet or vinyl roll after most of the material has been custom-measured and cut off to a customer’s room specifications. These “leftover” pieces are then wrapped and priced at a discount. Occasionally, a remnant may be a large piece of material that was leftover from an installation job. Remnants vary in size from small rugs to whole rooms.

What are remnants used for?

Remnants have a variety of applications, depending on your needs and imagination. Most often, people looking for carpet or vinyl for just one room will purchase a remnant and cut and install it themselves in their space. Other uses include area rugs, door mats, dog house flooring, playhouse flooring; the possibilities are endless. If you just need a piece or two of flooring at a great price, remnants are for you!

Is a remnant better than custom-cut carpet?

The answer to this question depends largely on your expectations and use of the carpet. With remnants, you must buy the whole piece, even if it’s larger than your measurements (which is good in case you’re not so great at measuring), and you’ll need to cut it yourself at home. However, with a custom-cut piece, you’ll have exactly the amount of material you’ll need. In addition, if you’re in the market for an area rug, we can bind a custom-cut piece of carpet with finished edges so that you won’t experience the unraveling you may get with a remnant.

Stop by FTG today and check out our remnant wall. You might just find that piece you’ve been searching for at a steal of a deal!

Making the Most of a Small Space

Are you struggling with a small space? Do you desire to make that space at least seem bigger? Here are a few tricks of the trade.

Flooring
Open up with lighter-toned floors. Generally, lighter-colored flooring is going to open up a tight space by reflecting light onto the walls. Wider planks and large-format tiles add unique visual interest. In addition, laying planks on a diagonal or in a herringbone or chevron pattern and installing tiles on a 45-degree angle will create the illusion of a larger room. If you really want dark flooring, pair it with a cooler tone on the walls. Large rugs or large-patterned carpet will also add a sense of grandeur to a room.

Lighting and Mirrors
Make the most of natural light sources, hanging fixtures, and mirrors. Letting in natural light through windows is automatically going to create an open, airy vibe in your space. Eye-catching ceiling fixtures take up no floor space and draw the eye upward, creating visual interest. Mirrors are not only great for reflecting light, but they automatically create the illusion of more space. Vertical floor lamps and wall sconces are another way to flood your space with light without taking up a lot of room.

Furniture and Storage
Realize that multi-function furniture is your friend. Keep things simple and reduce clutter by choosing ottomans that double as storage bins for things like blankets and books. Mount your TV on the wall to keep your floor space free. Consider a folding desk or table that’s there when you need it and can easily fold away when you don’t. It can also double as a table for eating. Set large furniture pieces around the perimeter of the room, and think about hanging tables instead of traditional end tables. Go up the wall with floating shelves and statement wall décor to again drive the eye upward.

Combining all of these elements with a little creativity can help you achieve your goals for your unique room. With the right flooring, lighting, mirrors, furniture, and storage options, you can live large in any space.

Fabulous Floors for 2020

1/20/2020

The dawn of this new decade is giving birth to some terrific trends in flooring design. The great thing about these trends is that they also have staying power: they’re classic designs that can stay with you for the life of your home. Let’s take a look at what’s popular in flooring design for 2020.

Tile
The joke is corny, but tile really is versa-tile! Technological advancements have brought forth so many new formats and styles in this classic design material. Whether you want a wood look, marble look, concrete, textured, or fabric look, tile is there for you. Black and white tiles in vintage patterns or graphic prints continue to gain ground as people go for retro vibes in kitchen and bathrooms. Home owners are also looking at larger format tiles and wide planks to suit their design aesthetic.

Wood
Darker tones and deep textures are taking a backseat this year to lighter, cooler tones and subtle textural features. Muted, cool tones like blondes, white oaks, and “greiges” are stealing the show, providing a light, airy, and clean palette for any space. Instead of a typical plank layout, many people are looking to patterned layouts such as herringbone and chevron to add visual interest. Smoother planks with subtle distressing like wire brushing are also desirable.

Carpet
Carpet is making a bit of a comeback with bold patterns and jewel tones. Carpet is a great way to really add that touch of vibrant and bold personality to your home, while providing that gentle softness underfoot. Geometrics and florals are gaining ground as well. If wall-to-wall carpet really isn’t your thing, you can always consider an area rug to add that spark to your space.

Waterproof Flooring
The waterproof flooring category is fast taking over the industry. There’s almost nothing it can’t do. The same trends we see in tile and wood are echoed in waterproof flooring. Many people choose this type of flooring because it’s perfect for any room of the home. It’s easier to install than hardwood and tile and super easy to take care of. Products like Pergo Rigid LVF and Pergo Extreme from Mohawk are available in many decorative tile looks as well as wood and stone designs. Not to mention, it’s one of the toughest floorings on the market.

The most important thing to remember about trends is that you don’t have to follow them! Your home should be a reflection of your personal style and taste. Fall 2019 Home Trends

10/28/2019

Home trends this fall are all about building something spectacular from a natural, neutral base. Lighter floors and neutral furnishings create a clean palette to showcase the season’s trends. Start by incorporating lots of color with pillows, rugs, and fabrics. This fall’s favorite colors range from jewel tones like ochre, magenta, and emerald, to earthy tones like rust, robin’s egg blue, and evergreen. Navy and peacock blue are showing up everywhere, and even plaids and buffalo checks are back. While we’re mostly done with “Millennial Pink,” blush tones aren’t going anywhere. Although blush is mostly thought of as a soft neutral, it packs quite a punch on pillows, walls, and accent furniture pieces. Add additional color to your walls by choosing a colorful, graphic-art piece that really pops.

While choosing colors for your fall décor, don’t forget about textures. Velvet is coming in hot right now, whether it’s on a pillow, throw, or an entire sofa. Faux fur and boucle fabrics will also add warmth and depth to your space. Another way to add texture is with natural wood accessories, anything from basekts to chandeliers. Items of visual interest that invoke nature like dried branches and flowers, a sisal rug, wood accent wall, or reclaimed wood table add a sense of calm and coziness.

With fall often comes a multitude of family gatherings, so we can’t overlook the “heart of the home.” This fall kitchens are giving themselves over to the dark side. Light gray and white cabinets are shedding their layers for rich blacks and greens. If dark cabinets everywhere are too much for you, install dark uppers and lighter lowers or an island made of natural or reclaimed wood. White marble, granite, or quartz countertops help brighten the space along with metallic fixtures in gold, rose gold, or brass. The kitchen is also a great place to showcase wood accents like butcher block cutting boards, wooden utensils and bowls. Throw in a few plants too. When all these elements combine, you’ve got a sophisticated, pulled together look that is still warm, comfortable, and inviting.

As for bathrooms, matte black fixtures paired with gray cabinets, wooden vanities, and/or vessel sinks with marble countertops are big this season. Add some splash with statement art and decorative tile. As the weather gets colder, you no longer have to venture outside your home for the spa treatment. Many people are opting for large soaking tubs, spa shower systems, and even saunas in their homes. Afraid of getting cold feet? Radiant heating (like the Ditra-Heat System) in the bathroom is the ultimate luxurty and alternative to cold tile floors!

Don’t dread staying in as the temperatures drop this fall and winter. Make your home a cozy retreat you’ll enjoy all season long.

Dorm Room Essentials: Featuring Products from Wayfair

8/22/2019

Is it time for your baby to leave the nest and explore the great halls of higher education? While your teen is probably super excited to spread their wings, going off to college can sometimes be a tough transition. Today we're going to look at some dorm room essentials as well as creature comforts to help your student create a home-away-from-home.
PictureThe Adena Ultrasoft Down Alernative Reversible Comforter Set
First things first. Every dorm room MUST have comfortable (and cute) bedding!  This alternative down comforter set is super soft and comes in seven color combinations! Remember to get bedding and sheets in the Twin XL size.

Dorms (and roommates) can often be noisy, so throw in some ear plugs and a sleep mask to make rest a little more easy.

Add a little flair and extra coziness with this playful, soft throw blanket, and don't forget to throw in some accent pillows for good measure.

Picture3 Piece Fabric Storage Cube or Bin Set
Next, let's talk storage. You can never have enough storage! Most dorm beds are adjustable so that you can fit just about any size storage containers underneath. We like these fabric bins with handles and lids to keep thing neat and tidy and at arm's length. They're perfect for housing clothing, bath linens, mementos, or extra supplies.

Keep shoes tidy with a hanging organizer inside the closet, and add another rack like this one on the back of the door to store extra odds and ends. Don't forget to add a makeup tray for beauty essentials and a hamper for all that laundry!

While college is a lot of fun, there's a lot of work going on too! Your student needs a comfortable, well-lit spot to study. Most dorm rooms provide a desk; you'll just need to provide the lighting and organization! This light is the most amazing multi-tasker! Not only does it have a built-in desk organizer, but it also features a USB port, perfect for charging devices while hitting the books!

Not everyone likes to study at a desk, so consider adding a comfy chair like this swivel papasan for those late-night cram sessions or for vegging out after!

PictureShugart Sealife Polypropylene Teal/Orange Indoor Area Rug
Now comes the really fun part: decor. Cover up that standard vinyl tile with a rug like this one that really pops and shows off your teen's style.

Cover the wall with framed favorite posters and a bulletin board for important notes and cherished photos. Add softness to the room with a wall tapestry or even fairy lights. Don't forget to include a full length mirror; this one even has jewelry storage!

Top everything off with your photo on your child's nightstand, and they're all ready for college life!

What'll It Be? Matte or Glossy?

6/11/2019

There’s a lot to consider when planning a tile project in your home. While color, size, and style are important, there are two key features that can dictate the look and feel of your space: glossy finish or matte.

The word “glossy” is often equated with “shiny.” Glossy tiles have a smooth, light-reflecting glaze that renders any imperfections in the tile microscopic. Because of their light-reflecting qualities, glossy tiles can make small rooms appear larger and dark rooms appear brighter. They are very easy to clean, which is good because they are better at showing dirt, smudges, and smears than matte.

Something to consider, though, is that because of their smooth finish, glossy tiles are slippery. They’re not always ideal as floor tiles in high-traffic or wet areas like hallways, foyers, kitchens, and bathrooms. Glossy tiles are well-suited for backsplashes, fireplaces, and small or dark rooms.
Picture
When it comes to matte tiles, obviously, they do not have a shiny glaze applied, making the imperfections in the tile more pronounced. Matte tiles, therefore, don’t reflect as much light and aren’t an ideal choice for trying to “open up” a room. They are good, however, for creating a rustic, homey, more natural feel in your space. The matte finish offers better traction, so matte tiles are a good choice for flooring in any area.

As far as maintenance, stains, smudges, and smears are better concealed on matte tiles than glossy, so there’s less cleaning involved. Keep in mind, though, that stains are harder to remove from matte tiles. If your matte tile is in a high traffic area, be sure to monitor the space regularly for any dirt and grime.

The good news is, you don’t always have to choose one tile finish over the other. You can have a fusion of both styles in your space. For example: whether in your kitchen or bath, glossy tiles are excellent choices for your shower walls and backsplashes. Coordinate your wall tile with a matte floor tile, and you have a beautiful, cohesive look.

The Essentials of Shower Design

4/19/2019

When you think about remodeling your shower, what must-have features come to mind? Benches? Niches? Fixtures? Color? There are so many things to think about. First of all, you've got to settle on a style of tile that suits your design scheme, space, and budget. Once you've picked your tile and have your measurements, then the fun begins. If space permits, work a bench in there so you can enjoy a relaxing steam from time to time. Of course, you need shelving or niches to house all of your shampoos, body washes, soaps, etc. Next, what sort of fixtures do you desire? There are traditional-type shower heads, rain heads, body jets, waterfalls, the list goes on indefinitely. Something else to consider regarding fixtures is finish: brass, chrome, brushed, black, or polished? As far as doors, you can go with no doors for a wet-room type feel, glass doors on tracks or hinges, and even opt for a shower rod and curtain. When all of your final decisions are made, the best part is watching it all come together to form your dream shower. Take a look below at some of our projects and find your inspiration.
